And why do *you* need the dashboard?
… might sound like a stupid question. Truth is, I don't need the WordPress
dashboard and therefore I don't use it. For me, it's simply useless.
(That's why I made Dashboard Skip
plugin.)
I am quite interested in which point are my needs different in comparison with yours, what is your motivation to use the dashboard (I presume, most people do have a reason to use it). Please tell me, what is the meaning of dashboard – for you.
This won't be much interresting, I guess. I'm going to explain my point – why I still use Dashboard Skip. Let's see 2.7 administration welcome screen:
- Right now provides for me no useful information. Why should somebody care about count of various items inside his WP? I can imagine, that this box is the way to check pending comments. Since I don't use Akismet but Raven's antispam, I never check this type of information.
- Recent comments I watch through RSS channel.
- Incoming links I watch (when I feel that I could, most of the time I'm not interested) through Google Analytics, that provides „little bit“ more options.
- Plugins box just doesn't fit into my philosophy of web-creation – means: When I need to do something, solve a problem, fix an issue, add a functionality, then I search for plugins that might help. I know that some people proceed oppositely – when they see a possibility, they ask themselves whether they should use it.
- QuickPress. Ok, might be useful. (Is it? Did Automattic include this feature because he knows it has its sense? Or is it just an experiment?)
- No doubts, Recent Drafts have their place on dashboard. I miss here complementary overview of upcoming (scheduled) posts.
- WordPress Development Blog and Other WordPress news? Heritage of previous versions. In my opinion, these boxes should be hidden as default.

The only real use I have found for the dashboard, is simply to display a wiki that I have been setting up for my web clients to use, this way they can easily access it when there is any trouble that they may be having with their website management, which stops me from getting unnecessary emails asking how to do something really simple.

↪ Cody – interesting, thanks!
I quit working with WordPress, comments are closed. My plugins will not be updated any more – at least not by me. Feel free to modify my source codes though… Also I am not able to provide support, sorry. –Kahi
