• Voted for media features in 2.9

  On topic of the recent (and today still running) survey on media handling / library / related settings and similar stuff I want to say a little word.

  I don't fully understand all of the proposed enhancements, although they were „explained“ in the announcing article as well as at beginning of the survey itself. I think it's sometimes possible to imagine various (quite different) things under each of the definitions.

  I can't say how much I a particular feature want, since each feature can be implemented in many ways and the way of implementation can influence my „desire“ for feature very much (I suppose). That makes answering even more complicated.

• Dashboard’s Right now / WordPress interface elements

  Dmitry at Usability Post started quite interesting discussion to his article A Slip in the WordPress 2.7 Dashboard Interface in which he lightly critisized Right now box, one of the new items on 2.7's improved dashboard. He correctly pointed out, that separation between rows but not columns can easily lead to a misinterpretation of contained information. His thought was confirmed by optinions of a few commenters who indeed were confused by actual graphical implementation of the box.

• And why do *you* need the dashboard?

  … might sound like a stupid question. Truth is, I don't need the WordPress dashboard and therefore I don't use it. For me, it's simply useless. (That's why I made Dashboard Skip plugin.)

  I am quite interested in which point are my needs different in comparison with yours, what is your motivation to use the dashboard (I presume, most people do have a reason to use it). Please tell me, what is the meaning of dashboard – for you.

• On 2.7 and growing in general

  New major Worpress' version is going to be released any moment and I must react with „WTF“ again. Again – because a few months ago when 2.5 was fresh and hot yet, I wrote down some similar impressions. That time, the most unpleasant thing were not-too-smart feature additions, if I do remember correctly. Today it's about the same thing, adding features or possibilities conflicting with my personal (WP) development philosophy:

  It's no reason to code something hard, when there's the way to do it as a plugin.

• 2.5 is here and I’m not excited. Why?

  WordPress 2.5 was released a few hours ago and since first alpha stages, more since RC1, many people have shared their huge excitement. Even people I used to find apathetic. But I still don't feel anything similar to excitement. Why this release didn't impress me, is explained at the following lines.

• No time

  Strange days have come, I have no time now. Although there are so many things related to WordPress that I wanted to write about. See, WordPress 2.3 was released and I thought a bit about *tags integration*. Is that the same case as widgets, which were (earlier existing as plug-in) integrated into core from disputatious reasons (not even talking about the effect)? I’m not so sure now.

  More things. I have got an idea to make a generator of `wp_list_pages` / `wp_bookmarks` / … function parameter, written probably in JS. You know, I don’t want to try to remember the syntax of them, names of variables and so on, so I think a click-able 1-2-3 generator of the wanted string could be helpful. A form where you just would choose from predefined sorting options, would fill in IDs which you wanna exclude… and finally copy the immediately generated function’s parameter. But I have no time even for more important things.

• Widgets integration – how good step was that?

  It seem like this is gonna be another article from the “wrong way” “category .(yes, categories are invisible for now)”. I’m sorry, but what can I do? I just must think about these bad things and another urge forces me to transcript my minds… here!

  My mindset to *Wordpress widgets* is really simple. Although it’s an interesting concept, I don’t like them and don’t use them because **they do not provide enough flexibility which I unconditionally require**.

  And secondly, I think that sidebars (like any other site’s design element) should be made in a way that is correspondent to designer’s aims and giving the customer an opportunity to change the design is not in interest of anybody.

  And even if the designer and the content-master are one and same person, even in this case are assets of widgets disputatious, in my opinion, from the same reason: opportunity to change the design easily is also opportunity to change design imprudently.

Yes, his plugin is what is it all about. The plugin is actually the sum of Ben’s work that was put together nicely, so we are now able to undergo the process of customization far more easily. Let’s see it.
